The end of the Summer Holidays is already here and all those late nights and late risings are now heading out the window as the time fast approaches to get kids sleep habits and sleep schedule back on track. Not only is important for helping get them to school on time, but poor sleep can also lead to issues with school work, mood swings and health.
With help from Alberta’s Chiropractors in Canada we’ve compiled the following advice for helping kids back into that natural sleep routine for school.
1. Once you’ve set a sleep schedule, try and maintain it. Don’t use weekends to catch up on sleep, or slip out of the schedule, as it will have a jet lag effect and catch up with the kids on Monday.

2. Establish a relaxing bedtime ritual quiet time before bed to help them unwind, bath, story or reading time will help their mind settle down to sleep.

3. Maintain a relaxing sleeping environment, all electrical switched off or out of the room. The room should be dark, and video’s laptops, TV’s and Blackberry’s should be out of the room

4. Avoid large meals close to bedtime, as children may struggle to sleep as their body works to digest their food.

5. Avoid high sugary foods, snacks and drinks, including caffeinated ones like Fizzy drinks, up to 6 hours before they sleep.

6. Make sure you have the right pillow and mattress for your child, this is essential. A mattress should be comfortable supportive, and be flexible and adapt to the body’s shape whilst still providing firm support. 1. An article this month online at times free press showed that more women are turning to chemical free organic cosmetics.
India Cox found that turning to natural cosmetic such as mineral makeup, she was able to calm her skin down and prevent irritation which was causing breakouts that even her dermatologist could not solve.

How to get chemicals out of your mattress

An article today in the San Francisco Chronicle shared some top tips to getting chemicals and poisons out of your mattress.

Choosing a chemical free organic mattress or organic futon should be a number one priority on every ones list because of the following facts

Polyurethane Foam is one of the number one ingredients in mattresses these days, and off gassing from polyurethane foam can release harmful petrochemicals into the air as you sleep. The Petroleum based chemicals used in making foam are polymers and urethane, which contains an Isocyanate compound. The Isocyanate compound is one of the main culprits that causes illness, asthma and other diseases. Memory foam mattresses use an Isocyanate called TDI (Toluene Di-Isocyanate), which has a strong odor and over time seeps through a mattress, and into the air. These chemicals in mattresses releases hydrocarbons that evaporate into the air we breath throughout a mattress' lifetime. These hydrocarbons are powerful carcinogenic chemicals, attacking and severely damaging the immune and nervous systems of adults and children. United States Department of Labour, claims that the health effects of an Isocyanate exposure include irritation to skin, mucous membranes, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing.

Hidden fire retardants are the other issue as San Francisco Chronicle points out, The government here as well as in the U.S requires that mattresses must be flame retardant. PBDE, Polybrominated Dipheyl Ethers are commonly found in mattresses especially older ones and mattresses made in China. As the foam decomposes over time, harmful PBDE in older mattresses can pollute your bedroom. According to an EPA study in 2008, PBDE is especially toxic to brain development, leading to damage in learning and behaviour. This is not all that maybe in your mattress though. Melamine, TDCPP, APP and pentaBDE as well as cynanide may be sleeping with you at night.

Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey believes that Fire Retardants should be eliminated from all mattresses, he says, " America's system for regulating industrial chemicals is broken. Parents are afraid because hundreds of untested chemicals are found in their child's body." Many parents bring their newborn or toddler into their bed, unintentional harming their children. The EPA and the Agency of Toxic Substances and disease registry does claim that, " children do differ from adults in their susceptibility to hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens and neuro-developmental effects of the fire retardants commonly used in baby mattresses" This unfortunately doesn't just apply to America but to the UK too. But you don't get many high profile MP's fighting the case for consumer safety in the UK.

The latest advice from some bodies regarding cot mattresses recommends that we use ones with a pvc cover to avoid cot death, if nature intended us to cradle our babies in pvc, surely it would grow on trees! San Francisco chronicle points out that PVC waterproofs fabrics but has petroleum chlorine in it which is a known carcinogen.

Bed Bugs – Is Biocide in your Mattress Really Safe?

The latest addition to the market by a popular mattress manufacturer is a new Anti-Bug mattress that contains a Biocide guaranteed safe for humans with a 100% bed bug mortality rate.

As a natural mattress consumer this would raise more questions for me than it would settle my anxieties. I can understand the need for this product maybe in high turnover places such as hostels or hotels, but still…. sleeping on a mattress that is not only laced with flame retardants, but now also Biocide on which you would normally, at home anyway, spend half your life, may not be safe for long term health, especially for small children.

Will they compensate you if you do fall ill? Or will they just say that it's unclear if the mattress had made you ill? How do you guarantee something like that?

Even though bed bugs do come with their own problems, here is a quick guide to taking care of the problem as naturally as possible so that you can still sleep on a natural mattress and not have to worry about Bed Bugs– Yes it's a bit more of headache, you may need to use chemicals, but a little careful attention could get rid of them for good, and as long as you're careful, you may be able to avoid getting them back.

Remember that bed bugs are not the same as dust mites, and a few precautions can help prevent you bringing them home. For instance, make sure you check pets are free of them and that you are not harbouring them when coming back from travelling. Do not open luggage on furniture or beds, wash everything in very, very hot water and hoover all luggage thoroughly, even in the seams.

If you have them at home already and need to get rid of them, you will have to take fast drastic action. Hoover everything as much as you can, include all your furniture, creases of pillows, seems, corners etc. As for everything else, wash or dry clean as much as you can, clothes, bedspreads, curtains, bedding, throws, pillows, duvets in the hottest water possible. If you can't wash it or steam it or dry clean it then leave it in the baking hot sun (has to 113 Fahrenheit).

If this doesn't work – get the professionals in!!! But at least then you can sleep on a pure natural mattress and not pollute your body on a nightly basis!!

I was recently approached by a customer looking for a Coir mattress to ease their back pain. As with many customers who come to us, they had been sleeping on a Tempur/ Memory Foam mattress that was making sleeping a bit of a nightmare for them.

It transpired that the Gentleman's best night's sleep had been on a firm futon style mattress that they had experienced whilst they had been visiting India. Room layout can be a tricky thing! The majority of rooms in British houses are quite small, so space is not always available to place your natural bed in the most ideal position.

The Position of your bed is however a very important factor to getting a good night's sleep. As a firm follower of Feng Shui principles, I have always been concerned about the placement of furniture in my home, much to my families' dismay; they are however used to it now, and also believe in it after seeing the results.

Feng Shui is the Chinese Art of Placement, it advocates that Chi Energy (the Energy of Life) if channelled correctly can enhance our lives and assist us to reach our goals.

Depending on how Chi Energy enters your bedroom mostly through doors and windows, and flows through the room, it will either hinder your sleep or enhance it. If for instance the Chi Energy enters your room very fast because it is flowing straight up the stairs and into your bedroom door without being slowed down by having to go round a corner for instance (a bit like this sentence!), then a natural bed anywhere in line of the doorway will receive fast flowing chi energy that is not conducive to sleep. Placing a natural bed directly facing the door (as if your feet are pointing out towards the door exit) is known as the coffin position for obvious reasons. 3rd on the list is Cookware. Although I don’t think you can buy this labelled organic, there are simply more healthy versions.

Traditional “non-stick cookware contains fluorochemical called PTFE that breaks down to form toxic fumes when overheated," says Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., a senior scientist at the EWG. "Those fumes can coat the inside of the lungs and cause allergy-like symptoms."

Tests by EWG showed that in 2 minutes on the stove, non-stick cookware surfaces can heat up beyond guidelines after which they emit toxic gases. These then pollute our food and the air we are breathing. Better options are stainless steel, ceramic or cast iron.

4thly and surprisingly is Popcorn…The inner linings of microwave-popcorn bags may contain a toxic chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, which is used to prevent the food from sticking to the paper. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state that PFOA is a likely carcinogen.

"We don't know all of the hazardous effects of PFOA yet, but we have some evidence of a link to cancer, as well as to effects on the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems," says David Carpenter, M.D., director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany. 9th Milk- Dairy products account for 60 to 70% of the Oestrogens we consume through our food due to the hormones that comes from the cows. In addition about 17% of cows are treated with the hormones rBST (rBGH) which stimulates milk production by increasing circulating levels of another hormaone called insulin like groth factor (IGF-1)

"Elevated levels of IGF-1 in people are associated with an increased risk of cancer, including breast cancer," Dr. Schettler explains. The use of rBGH is banned in Europe and Canada. I am still researching if this includes the UK. If anyone knows, please let me know! Although research is doesn’t yet definitively say that drinking rBGH-treated milk increases your IGF-1 levels Dr. Schettler says it's advisable to buy milk that hasn't been treated with it. So try and find milk that's organic so its free of antibiotics but also labeled rBGH-free, rBST-free, or is produced without artificial hormones. Not so easy in the uk!

10th on the list- Ok celery is next on the list! Celery tops the chart as coming out most contaminated in pesticide tests (EWG). This is due to the porous stalks, they retain a lot of what’s sprayed on them. Also switch to organic bell peppers, spinach and potatoes which also score really high for pesticide contamination.

11th on the list is Tomato Sauce or paste. Most people will go for a can, but this is dangerous due to BPA. The lining on the inside of food cans that's used to protect against corrosion and bacteria may contain BPA," explains Cheryl Lyn Walker, Ph.D., a professor of carcinogenesis at MD Anderson Cancer Center and past president of the Society of Toxicology. We often get asked about the purity of our latex in our latex mattresses by customers who find it really frustrating trying to figure out whether other online companies are selling really pure latex mattresses like ours or are just making empty claims.

Now with new regulations in place, it is no longer possible to make empty claims so we thought we’d show you directly what goes into the making of our latex and where it comes from.

The latex in our Boomarang brand latex mattresses comes from a company called Latex Green. They are a 100% natural latex foam manufacturer based in Columbo, Sri Lanka. The Rubber only comes from a specific planation and they have over 60 years’ hands on technical experience in Rubber technology and manufacture. Much more expertise than could be presented by a small, new or un-established company. The trees from the plantation remove 143 metric tonnes of Carbon Dioxide from the environment in 1 year alone. Meaning that your latex mattress is not only chemical free and pure, but is green in combating Climate change as well.

The process used is a Dunlop process rather than the Talalay method. General expert consensus is that this traditional method of latex production produces much sturdier latex foam and subsequently latex mattress which is more durable than the Talalay method of production. Expert dermatologist tips to naturally protect your skin from aging

Although fillers and the like tend to be the first call at the appearance of a wrinkle for those with superfluous funds, many others would prefer a more natural solution to anti aging than injections in the face.

It is true that everyone has a different tolerance level for the onset of aging. But most of us, at some point, will glance into the bathroom mirror and think, “Is there something more I should be doing to slow down the inevitable?
Dr. Kathy Fields, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco reassures us that “It’s not vain to want to look your best, whatever that means to you,”
Fields and her partner, Dr. Katie Rodan, an adjunct clinical associate professor of dermatology at Stanford University School of Medicine, are the authors of “Write Your Skin A Prescription for Change,” this latest blockbuster is an Amazon best-seller that cleverly blends medical advice, anatomy lessons and beauty tips and into a fashion mag style must have text.
They are not 20 something preaching to those of us who are tackling these issues either, they are in fact 55 and 52 respectively and look a decade younger than they are, they swear to never having had plastic surgery.
“Eighty percent of how we age has nothing to do with genetics,” Rodan said.
“That’s the good news,” Fields continued. “The bad news is that it’s our habits, the things we do and don’t do, that can make a difference.”
Over breakfast (egg-white omelets, with spinach, no cheese) they shared the following advice for improving your skin’s appearance at any age, including tips that even those who swear off everything but the most basic soap-and-water regimen might be willing to try.

1. Sleep on your back“Want one of the best beauty secrets that’s completely free? Sleep on your back,” Fields said.
“We can look at our patients and determine exactly how they sleep,” Rodan said. If you sleep on your side or on your stomach, your body weight and gravity can etch lines into your face. “A line between your nose and your mouth will become deeper over time, or you can develop a crease that doesn’t naturally exist,” she said. “When you’re young, your skin bounces back and those creases go away during the day. But when you start to age, you start to see them deepening and lasting.
The bottom layer of skin consists of fat cells and deeper hair follicles, Fields said. This is actually fat you want. It gives skin that full, cushiony softness we love — think pinchable baby cheeks. “As we get older,” she said, “we tend to lose that natural fat pad and collagen support. The skin no longer bounces back.”
For many of us, falling asleep is hard enough without messing with our preferred positions. So how do you change your habit? Fields recommends trying a contoured pillow. “It’s not good for snoring, but it’s good for the face.”

2. Exfoliate daily

“Exfoliation is something to live by, for all ages. You should do it once a day,” Fields said. “It promotes cell turnover; it encourages the natural sloughing off of the dead skin; it helps to unclog pores; it helps to get makeup out of pores; and it helps to make skin more light reflective. These are all very good things.”
It also helps the skin to soak up more of the active ingredients in your anti-aging creams, Rodan said.
The key is to be gentle. “We like round beads. We don’t like almond pits because they can scratch the skin. You don’t want anything jaggedy. Rodan also recommends using a roller fitted with tiny acupuncture needles — they sell one in their Rodan + Fields line — to break through the outer layer of the skin and allow the deeper penetration of anti-aging treatments. “With any topical treatment, some of the beneficial ingredients may get in but some don’t. With the roller, it breaks through the outer layer of skin, essentially opening the door for the uptake of these anti-aging ingredients,”

3. Even out your skin tone
that seems dull might be hiding a secret. Skin “As you get older, when you look at your face, you might see a little dark spot here and there on the surface,” Fields said. What you may not see with the naked eye is that, under the skin, is hidden spots.
That pigmentation can be “sun induced and hormone induced. And it makes your skin look dull and old,” Fields said.
“Think about a clear lake and a muddy lake,” Rodan said. “The muddy lake has a lot of sediment in the water, so the sunlight is scattered, not reflected, making it look murky. In the clear lake, light is reflected, making it look translucent.”
So what can you do about hidden pigmentation? It’s a four-step process: exfoliate, lighten, brighten and then protect from the sun.
“After you exfoliate, use hydroquinone (a lightener, this isn't very natural by the way and from my research can be quite dangerous, so in my books you may want to skip this step and go straight onto the vita min C serum). I don't think its safe but they say it is "and comes as an over-the-counter medication and as a prescription (2 percent concentration is over the counter, 4 percent is prescription strength),”

They recommend following the hydroquinone with brighteners, products that contain such things as vitamin C, plant extracts such as bearberry or licorice, or retinol or kojic acid. Rodan stresses that it’s easiest to find a treatment program that contains all of these steps. The goal is to even the skin tone.
“It’s the even tone that makes you look younger,” Rodan said. “Someone younger who has clear skin with just a little pigmentation may do this for a month or two. Someone in their 60s who has really accumulated a lot of this coloration under the surface may do it for six months, or until they see a brightening of the skin over all.”
But the last step is the most important: sun protection. “If do all this but don’t wear sunscreen,” Fields warned, “then you’re wasting your time.”

4. Avoid the sun
It's important to wear sunscreen — even indoors.
“UVA rays are around all day long, sun up to sundown, and they come right through windows,” Rodan said. “We see patients who commute on the freeway and their left side is more damaged than their right, because they’re getting too much sun through the car windows.”
The key is to ensure you’re wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA, the rays that cause wrinkles, sagging, dark spots and skin cancer, as well as UVB, the rays that cause burns.
Rodan advises patients to flip their sunscreen bottles over and scan the labels for zinc oxide, avobenzone or mexoryl as active ingredients. “Treat with your medications a week before your period, and it probably won’t happen,” she said. “You don’t want to wait until you see that first pimple to start. You want to prevent it.”

If you look around on various baby health websites, the information can be quite confusing. Information can be mixed and sometimes contrary to what you as a mum feel would be good for your baby.

For instances, some experts believe that the mattress should be covered in PVC whilst others say that babies bed clothes should be fire retardant treated.

Experts change from weaning at 3 mths to 6 mths, from putting baby to sleep face down, to sleeping on their back!!! Some say don’t sleep with baby in the bed…but I always did!

As a mum who has raised 2 children and is into natural living, I find these options grate against the grain. However, I am not a so called medical expert and you are free to follow advice you think you should follow. When it comes to baby I think only you know best, and sometimes with all the best intentions in the world, we end up having to change our opinions when it comes to the crunch.

So here’s my top ten tips on choosing natural baby bedding
1. buy an organic mattress, that is made of all natural materials, it can easily meet British fire standards without chemicals and should display the BS7177 standard as minimum.

2. Check the cot to be sure that the mattress fits snugly. There should be no corner-post extensions and no decorative cut outs in the headboard or foot board which could trap your baby's limbs

3. Buy organic cotton bedding that can be washed up to 60 or 95C to kill any bacteria or dust mites.

4. Use an organic cotton mattress protector to help prevent the mattress from being soiled. This should also be washable at a high temperature.

5. Use organic cotton bedding and sheets. The organic choice will mean that there are no chemical residues, in the fabric and the natural fibres will ensure that baby is at the right temperature

6. Do swaddle!!! Babies like feeling snug as they felt in the womb. It’s very comforting.

7. Use an organic duvet and an organic pillow after baby is about 1 year old, its not really suggested before then. If it is cold use a plush organic cotton or wool blanket. Acrylic blankets aren’t great and again a natural option is better at regulating temperature.

8. Make sure that the room has not just been painted when you put baby in. If it is painted, paint well before, air and ventilate and use an organic paint such as Auro paints instead of Dulux.

9. I wouldn’t suggest the immediate use of a dust mite spray on the bedding to begin with. Once its on, it won’t fade away straight away and if it doesn’t agree with baby then you may have a problem, just vacuum babies mattress weekly with the upholstery attachment and wash the bedding regularly.

10. Only use natural cleaning products in babies room and on babies bedding, avoid heavy chemical cleaners, detergents or highly scented fabric conditioners.

Dr Stephen Oluwole, a neurologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, said that one’s quality of sleep can affect one’s cognitive skills, adding that studies have shown that those that have enough sleep are better in school than those who either sleep too much or too little. How to Care for and Clean your Natural Latex Mattress

Sleep is obviously an essential part of our daily routine. Therefore it’s really important that our mattress is not only clean in the sense of being toxin and chemically free but also daily clean from daily dust, mites, skin cells, and other allergens. A clean healthy mattress will give you a comfy and restful sleep.

1. Flip your latex mattress over and around every six months. To provide even wear, flip your latex mattress so that the top is now on the bottom, and turn it so that the foot of the mattress is now at the head. Depending on the size of your mattress, this can easily be a two person job. Be careful to protect your back and try not to let a latex mattress fold on itself otherwise it may get damaged.

2. Cover your latex mattress, to protect it and extend time between cleanings . Consider purchasing an organic mattress cover such as the Molton Mattress Protector, to protect the surface of your mattress. The mattress preotctor should be washable, easy to remove and replace on your mattress such as the Molton which can be washed at up to 95C which will kill dust mites.

3. Manually Remove dust from your latex mattress surface. Dust, dander, and dust mites build up in your latex mattress naturally, although the internal wool layer will prevent them from travelling deep into the mattress core. Even those of us without allergies can begin to notice dust and dirt in our latex mattress. Vacuum your mattress using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner on a weekly basis. If someone does have allergies in your home, you may need to vacuum more frequently and/or purchase mattress covers.

4 If the latex mattress surface becomes dirty or soiled, then patch wash the soiled area. Mix a mild detergent with water until suds form. Apply the dry suds only to the soiled area using a sponge. Wipe the area with a sponge that has had warm water wrung from it. Allow the area to dry thoroughly. If the cover is removable remove it and machine wash at about 60C to kill dust mites, but do not use the mattress until the cover is put back on. Don’t allow the interior padding of the mattress to get wet. If it's warm outside, you can dry a mattress quickly outside. You can also use a fan blowing across the mattress surface to insure that it dries quickly

5 Air Your Latex Mattress Regularly. As often as possible , remove all sheets and coverings from the latex mattress, after hoovering the mattress and floor below the bed , open windows and allow the air to circulate around the mattress.

1. Filter your tap water: tap water can contain carcinogens such as arsenic, chromium, and chemical byproducts that form when water is disinfected. So invest in a reverse osmosis filter or a simple tap mounted carbon filter

2. Avoid Stain proofing and Non stick coatings such as Scotch guard and Teflon. These are often found in carpets, clothing, and packaged foods

3. Use natural cleaning products in the house and natural furnishings wherever possible such as natural mattresses. Regular furniture especially in the UK requires the use of heavy duty fire proofing chemicals

4. Prevent Sun Damage use a natural sunscreen, wear a hat, stay in the shade, and avoid over exposing yourself and especially protect young children

5. Reduce Diary and Fatty meats – pesticides, artificial hormones, dioxins, and PCB’s all accumulate in the diary and meats we eat. Where possible eat organic alternatives, soya milk is excellent as are lean organic meats and fish

6. Try and eat organic fruits and veg that is as close to locally grown as possible

7. Avoid unnecessary exposure to BPA: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic oestrogen found in some hard plastic water bottles, canned infant formula, and canned foods. Organic Skincare lovers will be interested to know that a letter popped through my door a couple of days ago from WWF – The World Wildlife Fund that brought to my attention the problem that is being created by Palm oil production in tropical countries.

Palm oil is used in around half of all packaged food products sold by supermarkets – you may find it listed as ‘vegetable oil’, in anything from bread to shampoos. Mostly sourced from Malyasia and Indonesia, it is produced from plants grown on land that was previously rainforest.

This threat to the rainforest also threatens the animals that live there such as the Orang-utans, Tigers, Elephants and Rhinos. Not only are the animals affected, but also local communities that rely on the same forests for food and shelter. Knock on effects also include global warming and climate change.

The WWF has been active in producing a round table on Sustainable Palm
Oil (RSPO) which is the only multi-stakeholder initiative of its kind that's committed to promoting sustainable production of palm oil across the world. With over 400 members, including palm oil growers, processors, traders, manufacturers, and retailers, RSPO has developed principles and criteria that are crucial to sustainable palm oil production. We are looking into membership opportunities at buyOrganics.

The RSPO iniyiative has made real ground in increasing the sustainability of this industry with over 1.3 million tonnes of certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) being produced over the last year, of which more than 460,000 tonnes have been sold to date. Natural hair care lovers will be intrigued to know what leading Trichologist Phillip Kingsley thinks of natural hair care treatments that you could find in your kitchen.

Unfortunately his take isn’t too promising. Amongst the old wives tales, Beer, Eggs, mayonnaise, olive oil, green tea, rainwater, lemon juice, chamomile tea, witchazel, banana, fabric softener, tomato ketchup, vodka and artificial sweetener have been suggested. I don’t know about you, but some of these products don’t really seem old enough to be amongst an old wives tale suggested item. Maybe more like something someone has poured on their head in experimentation perhaps...!

It seems that most of the above have their downfalls, and amongst the top downfall is the smell they leave in your hair. No surprise there! For instance, Beer does leave hair looking fuller due to the hops and barley, but you’ll smell like a brewery! Vinegar will leave you hair looking shiny whilst also leaving an equally unattractive stink and also re-distributing the oil along the hair shaft. Egg is just as good as any cheap conditioner but stinks like an English breakfast if it’s washed out with hot water-Mmm! Not so Nice. If its body and volume you’re looking for you could try Coca Cola, but it does leave your hair a bit sticky.

For colour enhancements, lemon juice acts as a natural bleach, but the results are unpredictable due to varying acid levels, Chamomile tea is also recommended for lightening hair but may leave your hair looking rather brassy. There is some good news though in the form of our use with everything Tomato Ketchup may which maybe the cure for green hair from swimming too much... a bit unpredictable though I hear! But here's a useful natural haircare tip - for some reason adding a little pinch of artificial sweetner to you hair colour helps the colour take better! No idea why though.

If you're sufferering from greasy hair - Vodka, will just completely strip the hair of moisture, so is not really a help. Witch hazel has got the thumbs up from Phillip as being of genuine use when applied to the scalp. If you’re looking to add moisture, then fabric conditioner is reeally not to be used as it is likely to leave you with a rash due to the chemicals! And although Banana sounds like a real spa treatment and smells lovely, Phillip tells us that it does not penetrate the hair shaft!! Not doing so well are we?

Last but not least Phillip says that Olive Oil will do nothing for your hair accept for leaving you looking like you’ve been drowned in a rain shower. I think you’re meant to wash it out after Phillip, twice to be exact, don’t follow with conditioner and your hair is left full, shiny and your scalp healthier….. and if you use natural rainwater, you'll find its alot softer on your hair and will leave your hair shiny and bouncy. you'll just need to collect it cleanly though.

If you're really not that brave you could choose a ready made natural haircare product, that smells nice too, seems the better option to me!!!

Natural Pregnancy Tips for Staying Fit and Well

Avoid nuts if your family has nut allergies and discuss how much fish is wise with your GP.

You also need more water - two to three litres a day. Limiting tea and coffee to one or two cups a day, or going for decaffeinated is best.

Take gentle exercise everyday, such as walking, or swimming and do gentle exercise to firm up your pelvic floor muscles.

Jane recommends the following exercises “Think of your pelvic floor muscle as being like a hammock strung between your coccyx and your pubic bone," explains Jane. "Exercise by pulling it up (as though holding in a pee), holding for a second, then releasing. Do 10 sets at least three times a day. Your tummy muscles will contract, strengthening them too."

It’s also important to keep your stomach muscles strong but Never do sit ups, as they will damage your stomach muscles forever. Instead Jane recommends the "sideways lift". Imagine your belly button is in a lift going horizontally back to your spine. There are five floors. Ground floor is letting your tummy relax, pull it up to reach first, then second and on to fifth floor. Relax back down the floors and repeat 10 times. Hold each floor a few seconds - but don't hold your breath!
Strengthen back muscles by "rocking the baby". Stand with feet parallel and arms folded: rotate from side to side as though rocking a baby to sleep. This works muscles and eases tension from spine to buttocks.

C&A Re-Confirms it’s commitment to Organic Cotton Clothing

This commitment comes following the claims made in the German Financial Times about contamination of Organic Cotton with Genetically Modified Strains. C&A also revealed that it was currently undertaking an in-depth investigation into the allegations made in the paper.

“We have contacted the certifying authorities and are actively investigating the validity of the details of the report. We will conduct an immediate in-depth-investigation on site in India,” the company said.

Certified standards for organic or ‘Bio-Cotton’ as it is known in certain European markets require that no genetically modified cotton seeds are used in its cultivation. “Accredited certification agencies have the responsibility to ensure that this is the case,” concluded C&A . The investigation continues, it is likely that the accrediting bodies will be coming under fire with much pressure from retailers globally to ensure that the matter is in hand.

Purity of H&M Organic Clothing Under Fire

H&M the high street clothing chain, have come under fire for reports that their eco conscious organic clothing may be contaminated with GM strains of Cotton from India.

According to German Independent lab Impetus, roughly a third of cotton samples tested contained genetically modified cotton. This was traced back to India, which is responsible for more than half of the global supply of organic cotton which is used by H&M and many other clothing manufacturers worldwide.

Monika Buening of the Federal Consumer Affairs Agency has said that although H&M are not to blame directly they should have been more vigilant. A recent article posted by DANIELLE ROSE in northjersey.com points out the difficulties that pregnant women face in trying to avoid toxins, eat healthy and take care of their developing baby.

A firm follower of using natural products, Danielle often makes up her own blends and potions to ensure that she stays well and healthy. What’s wonderful is that the type of things that she blends herself, are mostly made of products you would use to cook with. That is the true beauty of using natural products. However creating safe makeup is not something that can easily be created from home.

Danielle points out that although most women will switch to organic foods, quit drinking and leave toxic jobs such as painting the nursery to their husband, they often don’t realise that what they put on their skin can be just as important to baby's health. Lavender naturally helps ease nausea. Some other natural herbs and essential oils - basil, birch, cinnamon bark, sage and tarragon should not be used during pregnancy.

Also a beauty product listed as "organic," may not always be organic. Many high street brands and less scrupulous brands may only add a few organic ingredients to a concoction of other less favorable ingredients. Danielle recommends making your own moisturizer , body scrubs, and facial masks using simple ingredients such as olive, grapeseed, safflower and walnut oils. For instance you can add oil to Epsom salts to create a safe and effective scrub. Blending with Essential oils should be done more carefully, however. Are Stain Repellants making you more susceptible to developing Thyroid Disease?

The latest research from a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) has for the first time linked thyroid disease with human exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

This chemical is a persistent organic chemical used in industrial and consumer goods, including nonstick cookware and stain- and water-resistant coatings for carpets and fabrics. It is also used during the process of making common household and industrial items, including nonstick pots and pans, flame-resistant and waterproof clothing, wire coatings, and chemical-resistant tubing. PFOA can also be formed by the breakdown of certain other highly fluorinated chemicals used in oil- and grease-resistant coatings on fast-food containers and wrappers and in stain-resistant carpets, fabrics, and paints. Some of these products are everyday items that are used in our home.

Numerous animal studies show that PFAAs can affect the functioning of the mammalian thyroid hormone system, which is essential for maintaining heart rate, regulating body temperature, and supporting many other body functions, including metabolism, reproduction, digestion, and mental health

This latest study revealed that people with higher concentrations of PFOA in their blood were more likely to report a history of thyroid disease.

Tamara Galloway, a professor of eco-toxicology at the University of Exeter (U.K.) School of Biosciences and the study’s senior author, says, “These results highlight a real need for further research into the human health effects of low-level exposures to environmental chemicals like PFOA that are ubiquitous in the environment and in people’s homes. We need to know what they are doing.”

However due to the methodology used in conducting the experiment Galloway stresses that the evidence from the new study does not rule out the possibility that having thyroid disease may change the way the body handles PFOA. Further research is needed.

I still remember when I was 13 and saw the movie “threads” at school about the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The images from that movie are still engrained in my mind decades later as being horrific and not something I want to experience in real life.One of the most shocking things for me as a 13 year old was seeing a young girl giving birth to a baby and then ....what did she just do? Did she actually eat her Placenta?!! Yuk..err! oh my god!

I can’t remember for sure, maybe she did or maybe she didn’t, or maybe I picked it up from anthropological studies at University. But since then the idea that women can and do eat their placenta after birth in some cultures is not so shocking. And why not, its supposedly very nutritious as it’s full of protein, iron and other nutrients. In the animal world, nothing goes to waste, so why should this.

Nutritionist Susannah Lawson explains that 'The high iron content is useful for women who have had a traumatic birth and lost a lot of blood. Zinc is also important, partly because a woman transfers a large amount of zinc to the baby just before birth to prime its immune system.'

Other by products from our bodies are also considered beneficial for us. For instance, some cultures also follow rituals such as Urine therapy, for healing. It is considered each individuals own blueprint for healing themself. Ranging from soaking your feet in it, bathing in it to even drinking it. Believers will tell you that it is the cure you have been looking for. I have come across people who swear by it, and have actually used the therapy successfully. For everything from curing Cancer to less sever complaints, it’s meant to help.

I myself have to draw the line at ingestion. I don’t think I could eat or drink Urine or Placenta, but maybe rubbing it on my skin wouldn’t be so bad, unless of course I had a life threatening illness, when I guess I’d try anything! After all, we use products that contain petrochemicals, animal by products and toxins, so why should by products from our own body be less appealing?

On Channel 4 chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall fried, flambeed and pureed the placenta of a new mother and served it up to celebrate the birth of her young daughter, it sounds so wrong, but maybe we are becoming too removed from what is actually good for us.

The latest craze is skin cream that contains extracts of Placenta. The glitzy Hollywood set who would gladly use Botox would not flinch at this latest addition, on the contrary it adds that little bit of extreme style to their skin care routine. Urine extracts already exist in some creams, roll on Placenta.

Not for the faint hearted, Arsenal striker Robin van Persie showed us how its done recently when he flew out to Belgrade yesterday to meet a Serbian housewife who rubbed his leg with fluid from a horse's placenta to treat his ruptured ankle ligaments. Mariana Kovacevic has apparently already treated two of Van Persie's former Dutch teammates, one of whom recovered in just a week from an injury doctors assured him would keep him off the pitch for at least a month

So, is this organic? Technically yes. But I’m not sure if the Soil Association could certify a cream as organic if it contained Placenta! And all the ethical guru’s would surely have something to say about its use. Do they use animal placenta in these creams? In which case they could be depriving animals from vital nutrients that they would consume themselves, or would they use human placenta donated by willing new mums? Maybe the later would be more ethical and acceptable.

In the meantime I can’t claim to be selling anything with Placenta or Urine in it, but I’m sure you would be able to get some at Harrods or Selfridges. I’d certainly give it a try to see how it worked!!

Money worries can lead to marriage break down and stress. Stress itself affects the body very negatively. First Impressions
The Miessence Deodorants don’t differ in packaging, style and performance to any other deodorant on the market, they are however certified organic and completely free of any nasty parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances and most importantly the dreaded Aluminum Oxide which has been linked to Breast Cancer. The packaging is not flash or sophisticated- more functional. And it’s all recyclable (plastic though) but safe to use in the bathroom. It won’t break if it slips out of your hand. The lid removes easily to reveal an easy to use roll on which works without sticking, jamming or clogging. I’ve used these for about 2 years now, and haven’t had a problem to date.

Performance
The Aroma free deodorant is just as it says, Aroma free. It literally smells of nothing and feedback from many customers is positive with no reported irritation. The Tahitian Breeze Miessence Deodorant, smells slightly sweet and spicy, and I love it, again no irritation although I’m using it regularly. The Ancient Spice deodorant smells a lot spicier like warm cloves. I have had a few reports, not many, but still have had a few that the Ancient Spice one can cause irritation in some people. So if you are particularly sensitive, I would stick to the Aroma free or Tahitian. My husband uses the Tahitian and is happy with the scent, so I would recommend them all for either sex.

Purity
The ingredients in all the Miessence Deodorants are really simple, consisting of a base of Aloe Vera, Sodium Bicarbonate, non gmo xantham gum and bitter orange fruit extract. The Scented versions contain essential oil extracts to give them their scent, such as Patchouli, Geranium and Ylang Ylang in the Tahitian.

How to Use
When you roll them on, they do leave a wet residue, which for best results you need to flap your arms around to help dry. When dry, all of these organic deodorants are particularly effective at destroying and preventing odour, but need to be used regularly to be effective (at least once a day, especially after showering). They will not stop you sweating if you do sweat a lot as they are not anti-perspirants. Antiperspirants are actually not good for the body as it is important for our body to sweat out the toxins within our system.

The Good
A good reliable deodorant, nicely scented with aroma free versions for the extremely sensitive, totally pure. Excellent shelf life, the sell by date is about a year ahead, so its not going off in a hurry, unless you leave it in the heat/sunlight. Keeps you smelling good all day, unless you’re doing very strenuous work, then you may need to apply again in the day.

The Not So Good
Pricier obviously than cheap high street versions, but that’s understandable given the purity and organic certification of the ingredients. But still cheaper than Green People, and its come all the way from Australia (they do carbon offset the shipping). Won’t stop the sweaty wet patch developing under your arms if you normally suffer from that, but no organic deodorant will. Not the longest lasting bottle of roll on, but not the shortest either - about average in relation to other deodorants really.

In Summary
A good solid entry into the organic underarm deodorant market; the Miessence underarm deodorant slots perfectly into the not-too-cheap, nor-too-expensive area but provides great resultsa and keeps you feeling (and smelling) fresh!

You may wonder why I am blogging about an organic beauty salon that’s just opened in Newmarket USA when it’s a million miles from my home in London UK. The reason is because its one of a growing trend of salons that are deciding to go green.

The beauty industry professionals are the ones who are at the delivering end of beauty to people on an everyday basis. They’re the ones, who pluck and wax and tong and curl and straighten. For so many years now, they have been limited by the performance of regular products being superior over organic products which were unsophisticated and not performance orientated. Or maybe its just been ignorance about health and concern for glamour that has put organic on the back shelves until now. Now we see a change beginning to happen, the market is being flooded by organic and natural beauty products that are glamorous, science based and have superiority over their predecessors by far, and hence the slow infiltration into salons is beginning.

I for one am desperate for a facial. Not because my skins terrible but because I love being pampered, and it is really good for your skin and complexion to have the attention. But I feel so guilty. Every salon I go to has products that I would never use at home. Actually more than guilt it’s a feeling of it being not good enough. Having said that I wouldn’t want to pay £100 pounds for a facial. I tried that with a natural beauty salon not so long ago and although I loved the facial, lets get real, I’m a mum, with growing kids and bills to pay, supported by my ever forgiving husband who tolerates my need for green and lack of cash!

A Hair Colouring Lesson For Us All

It was reported today that a young lady from Greater Manchester has endured horrific burns due to using a home hair colouring product. The young lady involved is just 22 and is now recovering at home after three days in hospital. There has been no indication of whether her injuries have rendered her scarred for life.

This poor woman is unfortunately serving as a grave warning to all women who wish to change the colour of their hair. She claims to have done a patch test although general opinion appears to be split. Either she DID do a patch test and it was insufficient or she did not do a patch test as she claimed.

The lady who works in a call centre became increasingly blistered over a matter of days. In my opinion, she should have sought medical advice immediately, I do wonder if her lovely face could have been saved if she had been more assertive. Mothers across the world want to keep their children safe and out of pain, I can imagine this story will prompt many women to warn their younger daughters about the perils of home hair colouring.

People can be allergic to odd things or develop an allergy over time. When it comes to hair dye, whether it is organic or not I would always advise someone to test a product out on their skin beforehand. John Masters Rose Foaming Facial Wash: Product Review

At a Glance
When I received this product, straight off, I was really impressed that someone had finally done a luxury foaming face wash without harsh chemicals in it. When I checked the ingredients list, this was substantiated as the ingredients are pure and simple; there are no SLS’s, no parabens or phthalates. The foaming element of this organic face wash comes from Lauryl glucoside and Sodium lauroyl glutamate, on closer inspection both of these surfactants are extremely low hazard with the Environmental Working Group classing them as 1 and 0 toxicity respectively, which is excellent. The other main ingredient is Certified Organic Aloe Vera, (unlike luxury high street brands that despite the high price still use water as the main ingredient). Other ingredients include organic plant botanicals and extracts that have excellent herbal properties and benefit for the skin such as ylang ylang, aspen bark extract, plantain, rose damascena, glycerin and citric acid (vit c).

The packaging is really nice, natural high quality recyclable box, nicely printed, very classy and not at all tacky or cheap. The actual foaming face wash inside is in a brown glass bottle which looks really pretty in the bathroom, something you can definitely put on display. It’s not too big and bulky either so, easy to handle and it has a pump top which makes it easy to use last thing at night when you just want to go to bed!

The price is not bad, quite reasonable, at £22 it’s not the cheapest on the market but for what’s in the bottle it’s definitely not overpriced. Other organic skin care lines of this caliber would be charging £50 or more for this sized bottle.

So; what’s it like?
The fragrance is absolutely divine, not nasty yukky or overpowering, just divine. I felt really good after I had used the product, and have had this backed up by other testers who have also said the same thing. You only need a little bit as it lathers up really well, so it’s easy to see that the product is going to last for a while. It leaves your face feeling clean, not stripped bare but moisturized and soft. One of our testers has extremely sensitive skin and eyes, and found that it didn’t irritate her at all.

Leaves you feeling really pampered and like you’ve done something really good for your skin.

A week on, people have commented on how my skin looks good, skin clearer, pores are more refined and black heads reduced.

Good Points
Packaging, look, performance, quality, fragrance and wellbeing factor

Bad Points
Not suitable for people who like more traditional wipe off facial cleansers. Doesn’t say anything on the packaging about removing eye makeup, although it did take all my make up off and having checked with the manufacturers they have said that it is safe for use around the eye area also.

A top performing luxury product you can use every day; very pure and worth every penny.

Re-launch of Eselle Organics Due in the Next Couple of Weeks

Eselle Organics products have been a bit hard to come by over the last month or so, as they have been busy rebranding and packaging their line. Not that there was anything wrong with the old packaging, I loved the bright orange, but I’m sure Sarah McIntyre will have created something equally exciting.

Even though August is traditionally the quiet time of year, die hard Eselle Organics fans will have found the dirth of products hard to swallow, but good news is here at last as Eselle have informed us that their new products will be available in the next 10 days or so.

One product we will surely welcome back with open arms will be the Men’s sensitive skin moisturiser; all those men out there must have really rough faces without it. Not good news for the girls either!

A Mothers view of the Cervical Cancer Vaccine

I’m aware of the dangers, cervical cancer killed 941 women in the UK last year, but for me, this just isn’t the same as the other vaccinations that I have agreed for my children to have, it’s not a pandemic.

Even now in hindsight, my youngest daughter was slow in her speech development I wonder if the MMR vaccine was a good idea, but it’s done now, I can’t undo it. She also mildly had swine flu last month and survived it, so I don’t see the point of any of my family having the swine flu vaccination either, but maybe I’ll change my mind on the latter if things get more severe in London.

The cervical cancer vaccine however to me sounds totally unnecessary and I just don’t trust it. The vaccinations were dished out at my daughter’s school last year and I refused for her to have it. My daughter was initially alarmed but I promised her that when she got older if nothing had gone wrong with the vaccine programme, then I might consider it. Things like the Thalidomide drug come to mind! Sorry but they are using our kids as guinea pigs!

Cancer in general is on the up, it could be bowel cancer, or lung cancer or pancreatic cancer, are we going to vaccinate against all of these, how much mercury, and DNA and foreign bodies do we pump into ourselves in a futile attempt to stop the inevitable. It’s not natural. I love my daughters I don’t want anything to happen to them, but I do want that their years on this earth will be healthy, happy and unhindered by unwanted side-effects of the drugs pumped into them.

Instead the real issues should be addressed, such as cleanliness in farming in poorer countries; emphasis on organic farming opposed to increased use of pesticides and herbicides; removal of unhealthy additives in our foods; removal of harmful chemicals in our toiletries, cleaning products and home furnishings; reduction in the pollution of our environment which in turn pollutes our bodies; emphasis on education of our teenagers about sex, relationships, babies, diseases and loving themselves more!!! All these things are the roots causes of the illnesses and problems we are facing. Why are we not concerned with addressing the causes but instead insistent on masking the consequences?

I’m not a doctor, or a cancer expert, so please be aware that my thoughts are purely personal and in regards to my own girls for whom I’ll be dishing out organic tampons and pads, healthy diets, healthy hygiene and a healthy dose of self esteem.

Take up of the vaccine does of course depend on your vulnerability to cervical cancer. If for instance you are genetically predisposed to it or lifestyle factors put you in a high risk group then it would of course make the argument for taking it up a really positive one, if I was in that situation I think it would not be so easy for me to reject it.

How the sun damages your hair

When most people think of the effect of sun on hair, they generally think of it as lightening their hair colour. This happens because the hair contains melanin, just as your skin does. UV rays cause the melanin in your hair to oxidise and discolour.
