The Best Position To Sleep In

Everyday I have to fit the mattress to the person, by considering their sleeping position.  Sleeping position is the number one most important factor when choosing a mattress. It’s so common for consumers to buy the wrong mattress, everyone in the UK seems to choose from Pocket sprung or memory foam, and neither are great at supporting versatile positions. The best mattress is one made of natural latex as it supports every position of the body like no other mattress can.

Anyway, I digress! This blog is meant to be about sleeping positions! Here’s a quick guide to what’s good and bad about each sleeping position, and pillows for each sleeper.

The Back Sleeper.

Its best to sleep on your back, it prevents back and neck pain, by keeping your head, neck and spine aligned without causing any unnecessary curvature. It also minimizes acid reflux as your head is raised above your stomach level preventing acid or food coming back up.  Back sleepers also get less wrinkles, because gravity means their face is not sagging or squashed as they sleep. Lastly an important one for the ladies…it keeps your breasts perky!

The only people its not good for is those that snore, as it makes it worse.

Which Mattress: Medium to Firm natural latex mattress, and if you don’t turn on your side at night, then you can pick one with coir in it also. Top picks: Prima/ Varia Lana (medium/firm), Prima Rosso, Classic Coko

Which Pillow to use: Use a plumpy pillow to support your head and neck without raising it too much. Top picks: A kapok pillow or natural latex flakes pillow.

The Side Sleeper

This is the next best sleeping position that you could sleep in as it also prevents back and neck pain, keeps your spine aligned and minimizes acid reflux. Its also the best position for pregnant mums to be as your bump is supported on the side and not pressing against your internal organs as it would if you lay on your back. The left side is best for ensuring good blood flow.

However, it’s not such a good position for keeping you looking young as skin can become more saggy and creased, as can your breasts!!

Which mattress: Medium/soft natural latex mattress, definitely not one with coir in it. Top picks: Prima / Varia Solo, Prima /Varia Lana (medum/soft) , Rossa

Which Pillow: you need a thick pillow such as the wool pillow or a grain pillow that will keep your head, neck and spine in a neutral position.

The Foetal Sleeper

Some people love to curl up whilst they sleep, this is not so good for you unless you are pregnant or trying not to snore.

Mostly it doesn’t keep the spine, neck and head in good positions, hence possibly leading to back and neck pain, it also is a demon for creating saggy wrinkles on your face and saggy breasts. whilst also limiting your breathing flow. Try to straighten out as much as possible.

Which mattress: Medium/soft natural latex , definitely not one with coir in it. Top picks: Prima / Varia Solo, Prima /Varia Lana (medum/soft) , Rossa

Which Pillow: You need a plump pillow but maybe not a thick as with side sleepers as your head is more angled in this position. Top picks: The kapok pillow or natural latex flakes pillow

The Front Sleeper

No, no, no, no, no…. really the worst position of all! This position is bad for your neck and head, and back, its bad for wrinkles and bad for breasts! Everything is hanging downwards!! Your spine is un aligned as your head is constantly turned to the side which puts pressure on your neck an can leads to long term pain.

The only thing its good for is to stop snoring if you don’t have neck pain.

Which Mattress: Medium to Firm natural latex, and if you don’t turn on your side at night, then you can pick one with coir in it also. Top picks: Prima/Varia Lana, Prima Rossa, Classic Coko. Same as the back sleeper.

Which Pillow: A flat one. Top picks: Organic cotton pillow.
